Tahuari from Peru – Traditional Amazonian Bark
The botanical (Latin) name of Tahuari is Tabebuia serratifolia. It is a large tree that can grow up to 30 metres in height and up to 3 metres in diameter. It is native to the Amazon rainforest, typically found at elevations of up to 800 metres above sea level. It grows in hilly areas, away from flood-prone regions. Other common names for Tahuari include Pau d’Arco (used in Brazil) and Lapacho.
The wood of the Tahuari tree is considered one of the hardest in the world. Its traditional uses have been known to Amazonian indigenous communities for thousands of years.
Chemical Composition of Tahuari
Tahuari has a very rich chemical profile. To date, the following compounds have been identified in the plant: alkaloids, dehydro-α-lapachone, dehydroiso-lapachone, catechins, steroids, simple phenols, flavonols, flavanones, cyanogenic glycosides, saponins, triterpenes, xanthine, anthraquinones, beta-sitosterol, beta-carotene, chrysophanic acid, ascorbic acid, niacin, riboflavin, thiamine, as well as a wide range of macro and microelements (Cr, Mn, P, Mg, Fe, Zn, Si, K, Sn, Ca) and resins.
Traditionally, Tahuari is valued as a plant with antioxidant, immune-supporting and anti-inflammatory properties and has been widely used in Amazonian herbal practices.
Traditional Use of Tahuari
Tahuari has been traditionally used in herbal practices for a wide range of general wellness applications, including respiratory comfort, immune support, and overall vitality.
It has also been included in traditional herbal preparations used alongside natural wellness routines supporting digestion, urinary health, skin balance, and general wellbeing.
The bark is traditionally valued in Amazonian herbalism for its broad-spectrum use in traditional plant-based systems.
Preparation Method
For traditional use, the dried and cut inner bark (heartwood) of Tahuari is used.
Add 10 to 20 grams of Tahuari to 0.75–1.5 litres of water. Simmer gently over very low heat for 30 minutes, then leave to infuse and cool. Drink throughout the day between meals.
