La pacho comes from the Amazon. This name applies to both the tree and its internal bark, which has been used for centuries in traditional medicine. La pacho has many local names, and while in South America we will hear mostly about ipe-roxo or taheboo. Indigenous Indians inhabiting the Amazon jungle called Pau d’Arco a divine tree and gave them great respect because its internal bark was one of the most important medical supplies for them. They used it in the case of a huge number of ailments, such as fever, malaria, cold and cough, anemia, bacterial and viral infections, and fungal infections. The bark preparations also suppressed any pains and applied to wounds after the bites of poisonous snakes.

Over the years Pau d’Arco has become popular in natural medicine throughout South and Central America, and today it is interested in many researchers in modern medicine. The bioactive substances present in the Pau d’Arco bark are primarily lapachol and beta-lapachone belonging to furanonaftokinones, and kinones and naphtholone. Next to them are also phenolic glycosides, cyclopentene dialdehydes, iridoids and benzenoids.


1-2 tablespoons of bark pour a glass of water, bring to a boil and boil for 3-5 minutes on low heat. Cover and leave  for 30 minutes. Consume 2-3 glasses a day.

Decoction can be used externally for washing face and body skin, hair, genitals and anus, for gargle and mouth and in the form of eye wraps.
