Kamala (Mallotus philippensis) is a tropical tree from which the copper-red powder of the same name is obtained. This powder is a resin produced by the glands of kamali fruit. It covers the surface of green fruit shells, giving them a red color. This powder is used not only in natural medicine. For many years, it has been used in India and in the Philippines to dye wool and silk for today. After dissolving the powder in alcohol, a mixture of a beautiful ruby-red color is created, that’s why in Asia we can find hair dyes based on kamala.

Mallotus philippensis is a tropical tree from the Euphorbiaceae family. Occurs in Southeast Asia, especially in the Philippines, as well as in the hot regions of India, Afghanistan and Australia. It grows usually at the edges of rainforests and in places where rainfall is at least medium and high temperatures. Kamala reaches up to 25m in height, and the diameter of its trunk is up to 40cm. The bark is gray and smooth, sometimes folded or covered with bumps. The top branches are gray and covered with fine hairs. The leaves are large, light green, with a shape of a vein. Their length is from 4 to 12 cm. The flowers are very small and yellow. Form inflorescence in the form of raised bunches up to 6 cm long. Kamala is dioecious, so on one tree there are only male or only female flowers. The fruits appear about 3 months after flowering. They have the shape of an elliptical, three-part capsule with a width of 6-9mm. Inside there are shiny, dark brown seeds. The shells are covered with a copper-red powder, commonly called kamala.
