Plant description:
Ivy belongs to the wrasse family. It grows in the temperate climate zone, mainly in Europe, Asia and North America. It is a very common plant in Poland.
Until recently, it was one of the most popular Polish spices. Slightly forgotten, today it is back in favour.
Ivy grows in forests, gardens and meadows. It has very interesting flowers, the colour of which depends on the degree of sunlight of the place where it grows. It blooms from May until autumn. Young ivy flowers are green, and under the influence of sunlight they change colour to an intense purple-red colour.

Properties and traditional use of ivy:
Ivy herb is rich in substances. It contains e.g. essential oils, tri- and sesquiterpenes, ursolic acid, flavonoids, tannins, phenolic acids (coffee, rosemary, vanilla, ferulic and syringic), glycosides.

For centuries, ivy has been used in the kitchen as a spice and as a valuable raw material in folk medicine. It was used as an auxiliary in the case of digestive problems, inflammation of the urinary tract, as an aid in relieving headaches. It can support the work of the liver, which accelerates the removal of toxins from the body. Ivy supports the body in the immune response. The properties of ivy were already described by medieval medics – St. Hildegard and C. Bauhin. Already then, the ivy herb was used as a means to help purify the blood and stimulate digestion. In later centuries, according to records, it was used as an aid in poisoning and as a support for expectoration. The infusion was also used externally to wash wounds.
