Walnut and black walnut
Two varieties from the same family of the Nutcracker (Juglandaceae)
King walnut (Juglans regia), in Poland called walnut, occurs on all continents.
In Denmark, it is called the common nut (Almindelig Valnød), in Italy – bianco nights (i.e. white walnut), in English-speaking countries it is known as Persian or English walnut (Persian Walnut, English Walnut), in Russia it is called Greek, and in Germany it is called just a true nut (Echte Walnuss).
In order to extract the juglon, which is an important active ingredient, tinctures are made from the green (unripe) fruit of the nutcracker.
Juglone is an organic chemical compound secreted by peanuts. It is one of the strongest antiseptic compounds known in nature.
It is mainly used in the fight against parasites of the digestive system and in the treatment of bacterial skin infections and mycoses. It is found in green (unripe) nuts, leaves and roots. As the fruit ripens and the leaves dry, the juglone disappears as a result of polymerization.
Juglone is a poorly soluble compound even in warm water, while it is well soluble in 50% alcohol. However, a tincture made with 96% spirit is worthless because protein is denatured, i.e. changes in the structure leading to a loss of biological activity.
Only in North America there is a variety of walnut called black walnut (Juglans nigra), a name derived from the colour of the tree bark. The fruits of this tree are slightly larger, but there is no indication that they contain more juglon than the fruits of the walnut.
