Properties and traditional use of galanga:
Galgant is often confused with ginger, but it has a sharper, sweeter taste. Its composition includes, above all, large amounts of kaempferide and flavones.
Galgant has been used in Asian medicine and cuisine, especially Chinese, since ancient times. In the Middle Ages, thanks to the Arabs, it came to Europe. It was used as a multipurpose agent. First, it was believed that due to its spicy taste, it stimulates the appetite, improves digestion and bowel function. In addition, it helps to refresh the oral cavity and facilitates warming up. For this reason, the Chinese recommended its use as an aid in the case of colds. It can also have a positive effect on the well-being of people struggling with joint pain. Essential oils are produced from galangal root, which have an antiseptic effect and can contribute to faster removal of pathogenic bacteria, viruses and fungi. According to St. Hildegard’s galanga is a “heart” plant, i.e. it can improve blood circulation.

Best, it’s to add directly to dishes. It is very popular in Indian cuisine and is one of the ingredients of the curry mix. It goes very well with meat and fish dishes, and gives soups and sauces a completely new taste.
